Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul will hold a meeting of concerned government agencies on Thursday to consider the government's plan to recognise the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Surapong said Monday that representatives of the Justice Ministry, the Council of State, the Office of the Attorney General, the Royal Thai Police and the Department of Special Investigation will be invited to attend the 3pm meeting at the Foreign Ministry.

The government plans to recognise the ICC's jurisdiction thus allowing the international court to try the cases against the previous administration relating to the deaths of 98 people killed during the crackdown on redshirt protesters in 2010.

He said the recognition would not be tantamount to losing the country's court sovereignty because the ICC would not interfere in cases that could be handled by Thai Criminal Court.

"We want to speed up the issue because we don't want to see more coups and more undemocratic actions or killings of Thais," Surapong said.

He said the plan to speed up the recognition had nothing to do with the call by redshirt leader Jatuporn Promphan, who has said he would push for the change of foreign minister if the matter was further delayed.
