BANGKOK, 13 May 2013 (NNT) — Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana has instructed strict measures to control welcoming parties for first-year students in universities, stressing no outdoor activities will be allowed for institutions with repeated records of violent activities.

The minister said he has ordered the Office of Vocational Education Commission and the Office of Higher Education Commission to issue an official request to educational institutions, asking them to closely monitor welcoming parties that students in higher years hold for freshman. As a new academic year is starting soon, the minister advised that welcoming events should not be held outside of university campus, nor should they be involved with dangerous physical activities, and especially, sexual contents.

Mr. Phongthep said that an advisory meeting may have to be organized for executives of institutions with records of violent welcoming parties. He cited public concerns over inappropriate warming parties reported at the beginning of each academic year.

Meanwhile, Dr. Varaporn Seehanart (วราภรà¸"์ สีหนาà¸-), Deputy Secretary General of the Office of Higher Education Commission, revealed that her office responded to the minister's call by circulating a letter about the concern to universities nationwide. The letter includes the ministry's call for a constructive welcoming party that encourages free, fair, nonviolent, and alcoholdrug-free, activities. It warns the party should not affect individual rights of freshman as well as their studies.

The letter also said that a welcoming party must be supervised by university instructors and senior students, who are able to contain the party within the law, the Thai culture, and social order.
