BANGKOK, 20 February 2013 – The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has announced that it will host a fair to promote local wisdom as an alternative way to earn money.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Santi Prompat said that the fair to promote local wisdom will encourage people, especially the elderly, to use traditional Thai handicrafts as a way to earn a living.

According to Mr Santi, senior citizens account for around 10% of the population at present, and the ratio is increasing. He said in 17 years, the number of the elderly will account for one-fourth of the population.

The ministry is encouraging the senior citizens to remain part of the growing Thai economy by producing light works such as handicrafts. The fair will consist of many activities to promote Thai wisdom, including flower arrangement, paper folding techniques, fruit carving, and herbal soap making. Visitors could also enjoy traditional performances at the fair, which will be held at the Bangkok Youth Center (Thai-Japan) during February 27-28.
