CHINA – A nine-year-old Chinese student has become one of the world's youngest mothers after giving birth to a healthy baby boy.
The unidentified girl was transported to a hospital in Changchun, which is located in the northeast part of China. She was eight and a half months pregnant.
Two days after being brought to the hospital, she gave birth to the 6 lb boy via Caesarean section, reports Daily Mail.
The young mother is from the nearby town of Songyuan. Her family declined to speak about the pregnancy, but did say that it was reported to the police.
The news site states that law enforcement was in the midst of trying to establish who the father of the baby is.
In China, sexual relations with someone under the age of 14 results in an automatic rape conviction and a hefty jail sentence.
A legal expert stated that females under the age of 14 don't have any sexual rights. Therefore, "any argument of being consensual as a defence is completely untenable. Anyone who had sexual relations with a girl under 14 means they have committed rape and is to be punished severely," stated the legal expert.
A hospital in China recently stated that roughly 30 percent of abortions have been done on school-aged girls.
The youngest reported mother in the world, and clearly the most unorthodox of all the pregnancy cases was 5-year-old Lina Medina of Peru, who had a 6lb son named Gerardo in a C-section operation in 1939.
Medina's father was under arrest on suspicion of sexual abuse, but was later released due to lack of sufficient evidence. In 1957, another Peruvian child, 9, gave birth to a girl weighing just over 6lbs.
Several other girls over the course of time in countries such as Thailand, Rwanda, Singapore and Brazil, have also given birth at extremely young ages.
Nine-year-old girl gives birth in Mexico
Jan. 27, 2013 in Jalisco, Mexico, Mexican authorities say a 9-year-old girl has given birth in western Mexico and they are looking for the purported father, a 17-year-old.
Jalisco state police spokesman Lino Gonzalez said the baby girl was born last week at a hospital in the city of Guadalajara. He says the girl and her baby are doing well.
Gonzalez said the girl's family alerted authorities after she gave birth and the alleged father has not been seen since in the neighbourhood the both live in. He says that if the teenager's paternity is proven he could face child sex abuse charges.
Gonzalez says the girl told authorities the teenager was her boyfriend.
GIRLS REACHING PUBERTY AT EVER YOUNGER AGES
Menstruation usually starts at the age of 12 but it is not uncommon for it start earlier. In the western world children are reaching puberty at younger and younger ages – some girls at the age of seven. Many blame rising obesity rates because, generally, girls who achieve menstruation earlier in life tend to have greater body mass index and a higher ratio of fat compared to those who begin menstruation later. University of Bristol research has suggested one girl in six reaches puberty before the age of eight – 18 months earlier than their mothers. Periods are a sign that a girl is now releasing fertile eggs which makes her able to conceive.
