BANGKOK, 9 January 2013 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has reassured that the government is trying its best to protect the maximum benefit of the nation over the overlapping zone near the Preah Vihear temple, while asking potential protestors to rally in peace.
The Prime Minister asked those protestors not to make political issue out of the Preah Vihear trial because the government had already committed to fully protect the nationĂ¢s sovereignty.
She also said that the cordial relationship between her and the Cambodian Premier was a separate issue from the nationĂ¢s interest as the government has the duty to maintain national interest and it will fight the case at its best.
She said she had assigned 2 ministers, including Education Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana and Foreign Affairs Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, to come up with corrective approaches, in order to win the trial in the world court. According to her, if there are any important decisions to be made, the two ministers will have to forward them to the Parliament for approval.
The Thai Prime Minister also urged the protestors to rally peacefully, adding that the government will keep an eye on the border situation and try not to intensify or aggravate things in any circumstances.
Ms Yingluck also mentioned the situation in the restive South, saying Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung will, on January 8-10, pay a visit to Malaysia to discuss further cooperation between the 2 countries, in solving the insurgency problem in the Deep South.
