Mobile rate confusion

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, 15 January 2013 | 19:45

I read in the Bangkok Post today (''NBTC sets Sim card deadline, Business, Jan 15) some good news regarding new mobile phone rates announced by the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission.

All domestic mobile phone calls made from Jan 1, 2013, are now being charged by law at a maximum rate of 99 satang per minute.

However a quick check of my balance and call history clearly shows that the old rates are still being applied.

I telephoned my provider (AIS) to inquire about this and was told that to be eligible for the 99 satang rate I would have to change my ''promotion''.

I was told my current promotion meant I was being charged at a rate of 2 baht per minute (in reality it is 4 baht).

The current validity of my pre-paid balance is one year _ built up over several years of regular usage.

It appears, from the information given to me by AIS, I would lose this validity period if I changed over to the new promotion. Thus my validity would revert to the original 30 days for every 200 baht top-up.

A 1,000 baht top-up would give me 150 days validity. If I choose not to change my current promotion, AIS will continue to charge me 2 baht per minute for my calls.

There was nothing in the Bangkok Post article that said the 99 satang per minute rate was linked to any specific promotion _ in fact, it clearly stated this rate is now the law _ and is automatically applied.

Can someone please tell me how this new regulation is being interpreted and implemented by the various mobile phone providers?

How is it possible that AIS can still charge a 2 baht per minute rate on some of their promotions?

Is it the responsibility of the customer to claim the 99 satang rate?

Christmas not quite over

Peter from Kalasin (''Ghost of Christmas Past, PostBag, Jan 14) believes Christmas is over on Jan 6 after 12 days of celebrations, quoting various Christian references.

However this view is arguable, as Jan 6 happens to be Christmas Day for millions of Eastern Orthodox Christians, and Jan 7 is Christmas for the oldest Christian country on Earth _ Armenia.

Vet a cut above the rest

I read with interest David Brown's letter in yesterday's PostBag about ''Vets not making the cut''. It seems he lives in Rayong.

Perhaps you could tell him that here in Pattaya we seem to have no such problems. I also have a stray dog I have adopted and our local vet neutered it without any problems.

He did the same thing with stray cats that attacked my own domestic ones.

He has also helped me rescue many dogs that have ended up in an animal shelter, after having neutered them and seen to their many injuries.

I am sure he is a Buddhist, but his love of animals transcends his Buddhist beliefs.

I get the feeling that the Rayong vet is living in a bygone era and more than a little hypocritical.

But then who am I to criticise any Thais, as I am an ''alien'' afforded the privilege of living in truly Amazing Thailand!

Winning viewers over

To the Marketing Manager of TrueVisions:

I refer to the many critics of the new TV guide format, of which I was one (''Seeing total lack of truth'', PostBag, Jan 3).

Since then, I have received your listings (though late) and now I find myself coming to your defence.

The new TV guide is excellent and contains much more information than before.

The new guide is exactly what many of your viewers want to have because it gives a proper overview of programmes and allows the viewer to plan ahead.

We can all only hope that this service will continue long into the future.
