I am looking for an adventure experience, something that doesn't necessarily involve the beach or island visits. We have already done an elephant tour and don't want to repeat it. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Khoo S.
Maybe you would be interested in a jungle adventure like ziplining. Many people know about the Flight of the Gibbon in Chiang Mai yet are unaware there is something similar on offer in Phuket. The most popular is the Flying Hanuman in Kathu where you fly from tree to tree in the jungle courtesy of 15 ziplines and 28 platforms. Visitors have to don yellow pulleys and orange safety helmets then head up the hill and into the forest to enjoy a network of sky rails, sky bridges, high-speed ziplines along with dual ziplines, and spiral staircases. It's good fun for kids too. For safety reasons, there is a maximum weight limit of 120 kilgograms.
Phuket also offers a zorbing experience in a rollerball near Kalim Bay, not far from Patong. Zorbing is an extreme adventure that allows you to roll downhill inside a sphere made of transparent PVC. It's a fun activity, with Phuket claiming to offer the world's longest rollerball zorbing experience at 190 metres.
Go-karting is available at Patong Go-Kart Speedway. The track runs for 750 metres and has plenty of exciting challenges as well as flood lighting for evening races. They have 27 karts from 160cc-400cc. Nearby you will also find the Phuket Jungle Bungy Jump and next door is the Offroad Fun Park, a 600-metre track that can be raced in custom-built 300cc buggies.
The track has a lot of interesting features including water splash, bridges and long straight stretches with humps and boulders.
I haven't been diving for 5 years but would like to do some more scuba dives when I go to Phuket in March. I'd prefer to go over the basics in a swimming pool first. Where is the best place to do this, Bangkok or Phuket? I will be in Bangkok for three days to meet a few friends, so would obviously prefer to do it during that time. Is my stay in Bangkok long enough? Thanks in advance. Selle B.
I agree you need to brush up your scuba knowledge and skills after five years away. The two most widely recognised course operators in Thailand are PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors)
If you are a certified PADI Open Water Diver - PADI is more popular and easy to find in Bangkok - you can go for a PADI Scuba Review, Scuba Tune Up or Scuba Refresher Course.
If you want to prepare now, just go to the PADI website and follow links to the PADI Scuba Tune-up online course. The refresher programme lets you brush up on your scuba knowledge if you haven't been diving for a while. It's good to complete before you go to a dive centre to practise your in-water skills.
The course is broken down into eight sections: Safe Diving Practices, Dive Planning Fundamentals, Problem Management, Breathing Air at Depth, Dive Computers and Dive Tables, Planning Dives with the RDP, Diving with Enriched Air Nitrox and Diving Skills Review. If you enrol online, its system will give you with interactive presentations that include videos, audio, graphics and reading. There are also short quizzes that let you check your understanding of the presented information before moving on. The good thing is it will let you go through the programme at your own pace.
The website suggests that you can complete the e-learning programme in a minimum of five hours though it is available for you up to one year from your registration time. If you are going to participate in a practical course after the e-learning programme, print out your eRecord and bring a copy of it with you to your selected PADI Dive Centre or Resort.
Many dive centres in Bangkok or Phuket have their own swimming pools for students. It's not difficult to find. If you prefer to do it in Bangkok, many places offer a Scuba Review course, which takes only a day to complete.
Hope this helps!
