A group of Indonesian high school students is under investigation after allegedly organising a savings scheme and lottery to pay for the services of prostitutes.

Seven high school students in Situbondo, East Java, allegedly formed an "arisan" so that they could afford to pay for commercial sex workers.

Arisan is a widespread practice in Indonesia. Members contribute a certain amount of money at regular meetings, with a draw at each meeting deciding a winner, who takes home all the money. Winners can only win once.

The students are accused of contributing 5,000 rupiah (15 baht) each at monthly meetings, with the winner, who takes home 35,000 rupiah (111 baht), allegedly putting the money toward a commercial sex worker's services, according to Situbondo's HIV/AIDS Mitigation Committee.

The Jakarta Globe reports that the scheme was uncovered when a sex worker told an officer with the committee about the students' activities.

"It has been going on for a year. We've tracked down the information [from the sex worker], and found out that the arisan has been organised once a month," Heru Hartanto, the committee officer, told detiksurabaya.com.

"They use their school pocket change to pay the arisan fees," he added.

The secretary of the Situbondo Education Agency, Ateng Zaelani, said his office had formed a team to investigate the case.
