PM urges ministers to act on censure findings

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday instructed her Cabinet members to use information presented by Opposition MPs during the just-completed censure debate in order to improve their work.

Transport Minister Chatchart Sithipan said that the prime minister called a meeting of Cabinet members from the ruling Pheu Thai Party. The suggestion was particularly intended at the ministers targeted in the Opposition grilling, he added.

The prime minister called on the concerned ministers to take care of alleged irregularities involving such state agencies as the Harbour Department and the State Railway of Thailand, according to Chatchart. She also instructed the ministries to explain through their websites about certain issues on which the targeted ministers might have provided insufficient explanations during the censure debate.

"The prime minister said the Opposition's debate was very useful. She told all the Cabinet members that we should not allow this to be wasted. Although we won in the voting, we have to look at all the information and make improvement," Chatchart said.

In the morning, the prime minister and three other Cabinet members - Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, Defence Minister ACM Sukampol Suwannathat, and Deputy Interior Minister Chatt Kuldiloke (as former deputy transport minister) - managed to win majority votes from the House of Representatives after the three-day censure debate.

Meanwhile, Democrat MP Warong Dechgitvigrom said Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva had told party MPs to follow up on the issues on which they had scrutinised Yingluck and her ministers. They will gather information about corruption and file complaints with the National Anti-Corruption Commission, the Anti-Money Laundering Office and the ombudsman as well as related agencies.

Chief Opposition whip Jurin Laksanavisit would be in charge of the follow up, he said.

MP Suthep Thaugsuban, the party's former secretary-general, said information on the censure debate on corruption would also be disseminated to the people via the party's mobile rallies in provinces.
