There has been hardly a time when the term "the next big thing" means it literally. At the "Nation Media Landscape 2013" event held by the Nation Multimedia Group yesterday, the four words referred to something that encompassed everything and everyone involved in news gathering, news production, news consumption and the multiple ways in which information circulates.

NMG chairman Suthichai Yoon, in his keynote speech, said the term "convergence" in the media has expanded beyond the newsrooms to production platforms, consumption devices, related software as well as readers, viewers, listeners and surfers of the media. "The next big thing" is the convergence of all of them, a concerted force referred to by Suthichai as "N Power".

The power of this convergence will drive NMG's business in 2013, he said. In this challenging era, NMG has embraced all opportunities and tackled all challenges head-on, in the process becoming one of the best-prepared and best-equipped media groups to ride the winds of change, according to Suthichai.

NMG is striving towards making the convergence better every day, he said. The determination is underlined by relentless efforts to teach journalists to have multiple skills, to engage all news consumers and to embrace new technology, tools and platforms which are evolving virtually daily.

NMG senior executive Thepchai Yong emphasised the importance of the convergent newsroom as a place where work redundancy is eliminated, multi-skilled journalism is promoted and better, in-depth content is made possible. "Our convergent newsroom helps us with better management of human resources and improves quality of news by drawing on the strengths of collaborative journalists and eliminating weak points in news gathering and production," he said.

Another NMG executive, Torboon Puangmaha, told the audience, which included corporate chiefs and representatives of top advertising agencies, that the media survives and evolves through watching change, the biggest of which is the rising power of consumers and efficiency of new tools. "Without Facebook, Twitter or Youtube, the Gangnam Style phenomenon would never have happened," he said.

NMG's business and professional philosophies include collaborating for innovation, team work and engagement of the audience, whose number can be as high as 7.5 million if the readers, viewers, Twitter followers, page fans and members of community networks are put together.

As social interaction is given greater importance, guests at "Nation: Media landscape 2013" were introduced to "iSnap", a smart phone and tablet application that provides additional content to consumers of the print media.

Encripted logos can be published in NMG newspapers and scanned to send high-resolution slide shows or video clips to readers' hand-held devices. The app drew a lot of attention from representatives of advertising agencies and was a star attraction at the event.
