Buddhist organisations on Tuesday submitted a plea to the UN and Unesco to help save the ancient Buddhist remains at Afghanistan's Mes Aynak, where mining for cooper is scheduled to begin next month.

Some 200 protesters submitted the plea to the UN via a representative before moving to the Unesco headquarters on Sukhumvit Road.

They showed placards saying "Don't let business ruin world heritage," "Money cannot buy the history back," and "Don't let 2,600 Buddhist site die on your knees."

The move came out of fear that the 2,600yearold cultural site in Aghanistan would be erased from history in exchange for commercial gain. It called for the mining project to be cancelled and for Mes Aynak to be immediately put on the list of Endangered Sites and as a World Heritage site.

Those wishing to join Buddhists around the world trying to stop this project can sign an appeal to UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation at http://chn.ge/TstjEm and an appeal to the Afghan president http://chn.ge/Pux8Nr.

The organiser of the move, Nadia Tarzi, aims to get 200,000 signatures by November 30.
