At least 18 countries issued warnings and travel advisories urging their citizens to use caution in areas near the anti-government protest that kicked off in Bangkok yesterday, according to the Foreign Ministry.
Countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia advised their citizens to avoid travelling to central areas of Bangkok where the Internal Security Act (ISA) has been enforced by the government.
The Canadian Embassy in Bangkok said on its website on Friday that political demonstrations were scheduled to take place in and around Bangkok - particularly in the areas of Phra Nakorn, Pom Prab, Dusit, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Wongwian Yai - yesterday, and that the rally could be prolonged.
The UK updated its citizens about the demonstrations at the Royal Plaza in Dusit district yesterday and possibly today.
However, the Foreign Ministry said the warnings were only general travel advisories and no countries had warned citizens not to travel to Thailand. On Wednesday, the ministry briefed members of the diplomatic corps on the political situation.
