Work-related stress was behind the decision by a police colonel in the far South to take his own life.
The superintendent of Kapho police, Colonel Adul Pinaebango, 53, fatally shot himself just before he was due to visit a doctor for stress-related treatment on Monday.
"Accumulated stress had driven him to depression. A highlevel police officer had not granted him any leave for family visits. He was also pressured to produce progress on many cases," Adul's wife Chutima said.
She said her husband had told her about his stress when they talked on the phone and when she visited him in Pattani. Chutima lives in Narathiwat.
Chutima said her husband complained that his rush to sign an investigation report on missing guns without careful review had allowed culprits to walk free while innocent subordinates were punished.
"He felt guilty," she said. "He signed it fast because he felt pressured to show progress."
The guns went missing before Adul was posted to Kapho police station.
