Power usage peaks at 26,598MW

Thailand's power consumption peaked for the second time this year, according to Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

The power consumption peaked at 26,598.1 megawatt at 2pm today, as average temperature skyrocketed to 37 degree celcius. The previous peak, registered on March 28, was 26,423MW.

While saying that heat sparked electricity consumption, Egat governor Sutas Patamasiriwat urged all to resort to energy-saving equipment. The equipment should also be regularly maintained. This will reduce power consumption and also electricity bills, he said.

Thailand's installed generating capacity is now slightly above 30,000MW. The energy authorities are scrambling for ways to increase the capacity, in light of robust economic growth which would push up electricity consumption. The third-round of independent power producer bidding is underway, to secure 5,800MW more from gas-fired power plants.
