Re: "George W Bush found guilty of war crimes", Letters, May 29.
In response to Mr Bahrt's letter about blame for what's going on in Iraq, let me ask: Would you rather Saddam Hussein was still top dog there? In a general sense, it's debatable whether US armed forces should go overseas and meddle in other people's affairs. Yet many "little people" suffer greatly. Should the US intervene in Zimbabwe or North Korea or Congo? Indeed, half of Africa suffers painful oppression. Currently the French are intervening in Mali. No one, except the fighters they're pitted against, are complaining now - but later, when some dead bodies are shown on TV, then perhaps protests will sprout.
Who's to say whether such military intervention is justified or not? Or the assistance given to recent Libyan resistance against the suffocating Gadhafi regime? Currently Syria is the open sore of the always-conflicted Middle East. The beat goes on. The alternative to intervention is for the US and Nato to stay put and let tens of millions of oppressed people suffer. Or do as the Chinese do: tolerate every sort of humanitarian crisis, and merely go strolling in when the smoke clears - to make deals for raw materials.
The bottom line, and the hot potato of future political campaigns, is that there are too many people in the world, and human nature is at such a primitive state of development, that many leaders are worse than hyenas. To put it as a simplistic equation: overpopulation + primitive-minded leaders + fewer resources = mass suffering of humans and other species.
