Inspired expressions of wealth

In a recent discussion with a young, wealthy property investor from the Philippines I was reminded of the speedy evolution taking place in Asia's luxury real estate sector.

The seemingly unstoppable rush to develop in all sectors and locations in Asia, from affordable housing to ultra luxury, city centre to remote resort, coupled with the rapidly rising wealth in the region's tiger economies and emerging nations, has created a multi-faceted, cross-border property scene.

The more appealing results are now increasingly evident as young, style conscious individuals purchase properties that suit their aesthetics and lifestyle aspirations rather than purely their financial goals.

To match this new demand, architects, interior designers, furnishings specialists and high-end manufacturers of kitchen and bathroom accessories have all upped their game. Rather than simply following Western trends, they are creating unique products that raise the bar globally in terms of bespoke living and at the same time add a real sense of creative progress to the region's property landscape.

A leisurely browse through the last few issues of Property Report magazine offers a fascinating window on this fast developing world of innovation and design excellence in Asia. As an editor, putting together the regional monthly features feels increasingly like curating an exhibition, one that could easily be called "Living art installations".

In the last issue, we took a detailed tour of FAK3 Design Studio's stimulating blend of space, light and meticulous detailing at Ribbon House in Hong Kong, which, among many other outstanding attributes, features a unique internal staircase that is as much a sculptural masterpiece as it is a functional inclusion.

For the current issue, we delved into the design sensibilities of the celebrated team at global studio yoo design, a visionary collaboration launched by Philippe Starck and John Hitchcox who's first resort development in the Philippines, Aqua Boracay, features subtle, soothing interiors carefully crafted to make the most of the stunning tropical surroundings.

These and the many other new and inspiring projects that now pepper the urban and resort landscapes across Asia are a testament not only to the vision of the architects and designers behind them, but also to the taste and sophisticated sensibilities of the world's new denizens of upscale living.

Wealth can be expressed in many ways. The refreshing creativity that's increasingly on offer in Asia's luxury property sector is in welcome contrast the ostentation and conspicuous consumption so often associated with new money.
