BANGKOK, 18 May 2013 – The Ministry of Commerce has held a strategic meeting to find solutions for SMEs and export businesses which are affected by the rising baht.

The meeting, according to the Commerce Ministry, was joined by more than 400 people who are academics, representatives from the private and public sectors and exporters who have been affected by the stronger baht.

The participants shared their advice, opinions and concerns over the impact the baht appreciation has on the Thai economy. All of the suggestions will be proposed to relevant agencies, which will later use them to develop a relief plan to help SMEs and exporters.

An executive of a textile export company said after the companyĆ¢€™s merchandises became 9-10% more expensive in line with the baht surge, regular customers have opted to buy the same products from other producers overseas as they are cheaper.

The executive suggested other exporters that while the government is trying to come up with concrete measures to help them cope with the currency issue, they should apply for an insurance against currency risks for now. He believed a baht value of 29.50-30 baht per US dollar would be deemed acceptable by exporters.
