BANGKOK, 19 May 2013 – As part of a bid to fulfill election pledges, the Sukhumbhand-led Bangkok City Hall is due to re-organize commercial zoning in the area surrounding the Victory Monument.

Ratchathewi District Office Chief Laksana Rojthamrong said that Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) officials will next week carry out inspections in the Victory Monument area to determine the extent of the zoning. Only licensed vendors will be allowed to operate in the BMA-approved hawking zone.

The distribution of flyers and the setting up of information banners will be part of ways to raise awareness on the new system. Street hawkers found to be conducting businesses in prohibited areas, such as on flyovers, will be penalized.

The BMA made known that as the Victory Monument is one of the most congested and most commercial areas in the capital, vendors will be asked to refrain from setting up shops on Mondays in a bid to maintain order. The new scheme is expected to be in effect from May 20 onwards.
