The Ministry of Public Health has established a specialized center for bone marrow transplantation, cancer and blood diseases at Sun-pa-sitthi-pra-song Hospital, Ubon Ratchatani province. Showcasing its first successful case in treating lymphoma cancer in a 5 years old girl, the center will become an academic training center for learning within the South East region.
In a press conference held on 25th April, Permanent Secretary of Public Health Ministry Dr. Narong Sahametapat announced the success of the first lymphoma bone marrow transplant by Sunpasitthiprasong (สรรà¸à¸ªà¸´à¸-à¸à¸´à¸à¸£à¸°à¸ªà¸à¸à¹) Hospital in Ubolrachathani, the first hospital under the Ministry of Public Health to have carried out a successful bone marrow transplant.
According to Dr. Narong, one of the ministryâs policies is to raise the standards of regional hospitals in Thailand, so that patients in rural areas can access specialized treatment, particularly bone marrow transplant for diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and thalassemia, without having to travel long distances to Bangkok for treatments like in the past.
Dr. Narong disclosed that the five year old girl, diagnosed with lymphoma cancer, was the first patient successfully treated with bone marrow transplantation on the 7th March 2013. The operation showed good results, with the transplanted bone marrow tissues working efficiently.
