Domestic, external factors stir fears

Two private-sector organisations have raised concerns about the impact of proposed constitutional amendments on the economy, while in the broader arena, escalating conflict between North and South Korea is another worry.

Pornsin Patcharinthanakul, deputy secretary-general of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said some businesses were worried about possible rallies against the government's charter-amendment plans. Such rallies could take the business sector hostage while obstructing traffic in the capital. And these problems could get worse if the other side mounts its own rallies against the anti-government campaigners.

"In my point of view, the government should explain clearly the purpose of their amendment of the constitutional law," Pornsin said.

On the Korea situation, he said it was unlikely the conflict would lead to an actual war. However, it should be watched closely, since if a war did break out it would have a serious impact on the overall economy of Asia.

Paiboon Ponsuwanna, chairman of the Thai National Shippers' Council, said it was believed that North Korea would not use nuclear weapons against the South, as the whole region would be affected negatively by such action. China and Russia, which both support North Korea, have their own internal economic problems and they would have to be cautious about backing Pyongyang against the South. And if war really does break out, the United States will not leave its ally South Korea to fight alone.

"We are also concerned about local political problems, especially charter amendment. During the past few years, we have learned many lessons regarding political unrest, which has lowered Thailand's credibility and heightened worry among foreign investors and local firms," he said.
