BANGKOK, 18 April 2013 (NNT) â€" 285 people were killed and 2,783 injured in road accidents nationwide during the April 11-16 period of Songkran holiday travels.

The Ministry of Interior’s Road Safety Directing Center indicates that the number of death increased by 3 compared with that of the same period last year. Chiang Mai was the province with the highest number of accidents and injuries. Prachuap Khirikhan was the province with the highest number of fatalities. The primary cause of death was drunk driving.

It has also been found that about 600,000 arrests were made on traffic law violators. This figure exceeded last year’s figure by 100,000.

At the same time, the national police said 1 policeman died and 3 were injured while on duty during April 11-17. This did not take into account the traffic policeman at Phayathai police station in Bangkok who died from being hit by a motorcycle driven by a drug dealer through the police checkpoint.
