UN commemorates Int'l Women's Day

The United Nations is celebrating International Women's Day tomorrow. This year's Asia-Pacific commemoration of International Women's Day will be dedicated to ending violence against women and girls.

The UN said in a statement that globally, up to seven in ten women will be beaten, raped, abused, or mutilated in their lifetimes. Violence against women is a living reality, universal to all countries, societies and cultures. It wrecks families and communities. It stunts development. It is a global pandemic that we can, and must, prevent.

The commemoration will take place in the morning of March 8 at the United Nations Conference Centre. It will honor four survivors of violence from throughout Asia and the Pacific, who will tell their stories of channeling their own experience into activism.

The event features keynote speaker, Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP.

The commemoration is being organised by the United Nations Regional Coordination Mechanism Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women under the leadership of ESCAP and UN Women.
