CHIANG MAI, 20 March 2013 (NNT) â€" A driver for a subsidiary company of Krung Thai Bank has been arrested for stealing 9.2 million baht of cash from the bank’s money truck on 6 March.
Region 5 police yesterday apprehended 36-year-old Sumek Loetphanuphat and seized 8.8 million baht of cash, a 9mm handgun, and a Honda City sedan. The money was taken while the money truck was parked in front of Krung Thai Bank’s Mae Rim branch in Chiang Mai province.
Mr. Sumek claimed he stole the money because he was annoyed with the company’s system of management and corruption of the employees’ central fund. He said he became vengeful after having submitted complaint letters many times, only to be scolded by management afterwards. He added he had not yet made plans about what to do with the money, having acted solely in the interest of getting back at the company.
Police, however, do not believe Mr. Sumek was the sole perpetrator in the case, because there remain several conflicting points about the timing and characteristics of the heist.
