Although it sounds like either a journalist watering hole (moths to the light), or a disused printing factory, Thong Lor newcomer print bar is both neither and a lot more. The first child of ex-hotel-FB-man David Stanton instead utilises the motif of the print media industry - the world of graphic icons, where image is everything, surface reigns supreme - to lure us in. But the laidback Kiwi has also tried to put a neighbourhood spin on things as well (albeit in one of the biggest bridge-and-tunnel destinations of the city). The result? A luring but slightly confused bar on the bustling Thong Lor watering strip, located both geographically and conceptually in the middle of big players Gossip and Soul Food Manahakorn. Intrigued? So were we.
Be greeted at the entrance by the winking neon lady who overlooks the stylishly converted shophouse as you sip on one of the tasty cocktails. The bar staff seem settled beyond their few months in the saddle. Try Tamarind margarita (B260, prices include tax) for a sweet and earthy finish or Spiked lemonade (B240) for its fun presentation and lemongrass play. The varied beer selection (B155-B280) comes courtesy of friendly neighbour Chris Foo from HOBS just down the road.
Food selections are pretty good too, offering a snack range that would make up a meal in a pinch. Mini rare tuna burgers (B260) are moorish, as are chicken skewers (B160) with their lemongrass and lime garnish. Impressive for such a small kitchen.
There are further touches of flair here and there, including reprinted novels as bill holders and a commissioned street artwork in the bathroom, which you are invited to contribute to with the supplied markers. Look out for the Guru love!
There's a lot of consideration and care at print, which works well to patch the contrasting elements together. But it's tough to stand out in Thong Lor with the likes of barchitect Ash Sutton around.
PARTY
Taking the piss out of the election (somebody has to do it) tonight (Mar 1), is Dudesweet with a campaign party. They are providing their own polling booths, but be warned: Note might not hold himself responsible for the result. Video art will come from Kornkrit Jianpinidnan. Entry is B260; at Sonic (90 Sukhumvit Soi 63, 02-382-3395).
DJ GIG
Also on tonight (Mar 1) is the final Bangkok gig of local lady legend Nakadia who has been in town for the season and bids us farewell for her Euro base for the summer next week. Although she seems to feel at home on the islands, she can still rock the indoor floor, so Glow (96/4-5 Sukhumvit Soi 23, 02-261-4446, www.glowbkk.com) will no doubt play gracious host to her once again. Hopefully they can get the PA fixed up right. Entry is B350, but she's gonna play all night apparently.
MUSIC FESTIVAL
Continuing the Thailand-Berlin connection is electro music fest Thaibreak 2013, which runs Mon (Mar 4) to Mar 20. The line-up of DJs is long, as you would expect from a 2-week gig, and the concept is basically just a bunch of Germans (and Panda) on holiday partying it up. But it seems to work. What could go wrong? Beach venue is Koh Mak Resort, but they will have a city version with some of the DJs at Levels (6/F, 35 Sukhumvit Soi 11, 082-308-3246, facebook.com/levelsclub) on Tue (Mar 5) to save you the trip.
ART EXHIBITION
For something lower key, try new exhibition from local creative shock jock Michael Shaowanasai, who will open his "Dee rue Leaw: 2013 Concept Collections" show on Thu (Mar 7). The effort is a collaboration with other big names in the local art scene, namely designer Pring and Kornkrit Jianpinidnan (involved in the "Vote Dudesweet" gig), delving into the world of garments, appearances and inner and outer projections. The opening soiree starts at 6:30pm, at RMA Institute (238 Sai Nam Thip Soi 2, Sukhumvit Soi 22. 02-663-0809, www.rmainstitute.net). The work will be shown through Mar.G
