A star-strewn Manchester United side will return to Thailand for the first time in more than a decade in July, to mark the 80th anniversary of sponsors Boon Rawd Brewery.
The 19-time English champions last visited the Kingdom in 2001 when they beat a Thai all-star side 2-1 courtesy of goals from winger Ryan Giggs and now-retired striker Dwight York.
Twelve years on, the Red Devils, who enjoy a huge global fan base, will make their return, with local fans eagerly anticipating that chance to see a fresh crop of stars that includes Dutch hitman Robin van Persie.
Barring injury or a call-up to their national team, a full complement of first-team players will make the trip, says Singha beer-maker Boon Rawd, which recently inked another three-year deal with the club.
"We have been Manchester United's global partners for the past three years and we have extended the partnership to 2016. We have been good partners for each other since we first signed the deal. To celebrate our 80th anniversary this year, we decided to bring over the United team and pay something back to society and football fans in particular," said Boon Rawd executive director Piti Bhirom Bhakdi, at a packed press conference yesterday.
"We will reveal more details about tickets later next month, plus the players for the Singha All Stars team who will face United," he added.
Manchester United chief executive David Gill said: "Our visit to Thailand in July will play an important role in the team's pre-season preparations, as well as enabling the club to engage with its global fans and commercial partners."
"There are over 19.5 million Manchester United followers in Thailand and the club has been lucky enough to visit on a number of occasions."
The squad, led by long-serving manager Alex Ferguson, is due to arrive in Bangkok on July 11, then take a training session and take part in activities with Singha the following day. Their match at Rajamangala National stadium is scheduled for July 13.
The arrival of the United will kick off a feast of football in the country, with local fans getting visits from four big European clubs in the space of just over a month. After Man U come European champions Chelsea, for a match on July 17, followed by Liverpool on July 28 and Spanish giants Barcelona on August 10.
