CITES CoP16 officially opened in Bangkok

BANGKOK, 3 March 2013 (NNT) â€" The international gathering aimed at combating wildlife crimes has officially been kicked off in Bangkok, with a focus on inviting all parties to help achieve the sustainable conservation of environment.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, on Sunday, chaired the official opening of the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora or CITES CoP16, at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok.


This year, Thailand’s National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department has been tasked with the hosting of the gathering, scheduled during March3-14.


At the opening, PM Yingluck welcomed all representatives and delegates from 177 member states and countries as well as various organizations while stressing Thailand’s determination to boost awareness on environmental conservation.


Before CITES CoP16 comes to an end, Thailand is planning to make a number of propositions to the meeting, such as the declaration of March 3 of every year the World Wildlife Day, the inclusion of Siamese Rosewood in CITES Appendix 2 and the stringent control of elephant ivory and rhino horn trade.
