Army chief travels down south

BANGKOK, 9 March 2013 – Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army Gen.Prayuth Chan-ocha has traveled to the deep South to observe the situation and instructed army forces stationed in the region to prepare measures for possible car bomb in Songkhla province.

Army chief Gen.Prayuth and government advisor Gen.Yuthasak Sasiprapha on Friday visited the southernmost region and attended a meeting between relevant units on violence in the area. The army chief said he had been informed of the current situation, especially the government’s efforts to talk with insurgents. As for the rumors of car bomb in Hat Yai district in Songkhla, Gen.Prayuth said he had discussed the matter with the 4th Army Area Commander and the provincial governor and asked them to prepare for possible attacks.


Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Democrat Party Abhisit Vejjajiva said he was looking forward to a new round of talks between the government and leaders of the BRN insurgent group on 28 March. He also called on the government to have clear guidelines on solutions to the southern unrest and clarify in front of Parliament the peace pact signing with the BRN .
