BANGKOK, 22 February 2013 (NNT) â€" Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr has met with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul to discuss a range of regional economic and security matters.

During the meeting, both ministers agreed on the condemnation of the latest North Korea's nuclear testing, which posed a major threat to international peace.

The Australian minister also expressed his appreciation for Thailand’s support for Australia’s election to the UN Security Council in October last year.

The 2 ministers also talked about education, the pillar of the relationship between the 2 countries. According to Mr Carr, over 19,900 Thai students are studying in Australia. In reciprocity, Australia will this year grant 11 scholarships to its students to come and study in Thai universities.

Both ministers said at the end of the meeting that they were looking forward to fostering the two countries' economic ties, as Thailand is Australia’s 9th largest trading partner, while Australia is Thailand’s 8th largest trading partner.
