John Kuhn, a businessman-turned-author, has seven tips for people wishing to climb up the corporate ladder or run a successful business.

In his book "Street Smart Disciplines of Successful People: 7 Indispensable Disciplines for Breakout Business Success", which he co-wrote with his friend Mark Mullins, Kuhn lists seven vital disciplines that people should incorporate into their playbook to reach the pinnacle of success in business.

The seven disciplines are: be worksmart, present everything, deal with people, watch your money, get more business, manage yourself and everybody sells.

At a recent interview in Bangkok, Kuhn said: "Predominantly, the book is based on my experience."

About a decade ago, Kuhn and Mullins started their first business with capital of less than US$1,000 (Bt30,000) and turned it into a successful company before selling it - debt free - to a Forbes 500 firm.

The two authors also watched other businessmen to build their compilation of advice, tips and techniques, and discovered that in most cases, that same set of seven disciplines applied.

When asked why his book is different from other how-to tomes on the market, Kuhn said: "It's not theory, just practical straight-talking."

The book is written in an engaging style offering real-life examples. Kuhn said he did not study the management method of Thai companies, but believes his disciplines are universally applicable.

This how-to book lists things one can do under the seven disciplines. For instance, the first chapter teaches readers how to manage the complexity of change.

"The difficult issue is that business is not a theoretical field, but one of practicality. There is no prescription for what will work when dealing with change and complexity."

One should experiment with various possible options and test drive them in the market place, he advises.

In Chapter Two, under "Present Everything", the book notes: "You're probably already making more presentations that you realise. But because you're not viewing them as presentations, they may often end up being just conversation … Successful business people recognise when a presentation, not just a conversation, needs to happen."

The book also recommends readers cultivate people skills that pave the way to breakout success by conducting a personal audit and self-evaluation. "Don't label people before you have a chance to find out what they are really about," the book advises.

When asked which discipline can be considered the most important, he said: "I would say all seven are all crucial, but if you stick a gun to my head, I would say its work-smart."

He added that an aspiring businessman should start with a roadmap for what he wants to do and spend some time on self-analysis.

"It's very important to look at what's going on in your life to keep on succeeding."
