Famous Thai singer Maithai Jaitawan was arrested for singing at a concert in Pattaya. The incident underscores the ongoing saga about playing unlicensed music in Pattaya bars and karaoke joints. A complaint had been lodged by GMM Music Publishing International that Maithai, 45, was singing without permission. Police tried to arrest the singer after he finished his last song, but Maithai escaped onto his band's bus. When apprehended, he told police that he had formerly worked for GMM but has been a freelance singer for the last six years. He denied any knowledge of intentionally breaking the law and pointed out he did not have a lawyer to represent or advise him. Maithai posted bail of 50,000 baht. Police said that the company and the accused would probably reach an amicable compromise, thus obviating the need for a lengthy court case.
