Police arrests alleged rapist of aScottish tourist in Nakhon Si Thammarat

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 20 February 2013 (NNT) â€" Nakon Si Thammarat police have arrested the man who allegedly raped a Scottish tourist in the province on February 15.

26-year-old Phongphat Phosoi confessed to the crime, explaining that he saw that the woman was very drunk and was trying to help her, but became sexually aroused after seeing the victim wearing a short skirt. He said he tried to rape the victim twice, but did not succeed both times.


Police had Mr. Phongphat re-enact the crime scene inside a shop house near Robinson Ocean department store in Nakhon Si Thammarat̢۪s Mueang district. Around 100 policemen were present to prevent locals from attacking the rapist.


Police officials said the case was complicated, because the victim was so drunk when the incident took place that she could not remember what happened. She could not remember Mr. Phongphat when police showed him to her after arresting him.

DNA samples are being analyzed to verify the rape.
