The National Institute of Educational Testing Service (NIETS) has compensated students who sat for this year's ONET science subject tests and encountered errors on their test papers with 24 free marks for their scores.
According to Dr. Samphan Phanphruek, director of the NIETS, about 80,000 sets of test papers had 16 duplicated questions on each set, and students were not able to mark the answer sheet for 9 of these questions. 13 questions were also missing from each set. In all, the errors amount to a score loss of 24 points. The NIETS has thus decided, for the benefit of the test takers, to give 24 free marks for every student who sat for the ONET science subject test. He said the error was due to a computer system malfunction, resulting in questions from one set of tests appearing on another set.
Dr. Samphan apologized for the error, and said he has set up a committee to investigate the flop and to determine whether the problem was caused by human negligence or a system error. He promised to find ways to prevent such error from recurring, and asked that he be judged on future work performance.
Around 400,000 students took the ONET science subject test in question.
