Numthong Gallery, in collaboration with Objectifs, a Singapore-based centre for photography and film-making, presents "Can You Hear Me?", an exhibition of video work. The exhibition is by six Thai artists: Jakrawal Nilthamrong, Tulapop Saenjaroen, Taiki Sakpisit, Michael Shaowanasai, Chulayarnon Siriphol and Sutthirat Supaparinya.
Can You HearMe? opens tomorrow at Numthong Gallery, Phahon Yothin Soi 7 where it will run until March 2. The gallery is open daily, except Sunday, from11amto 6pm. Call 02-617-2794.
The non-confrontational nature typical of early Thai video experimentation back in the 1990s has morphed, as a result of recent social clashes here and the domestic political impasse, into a new form of dissent and documentation. While bringing together two generations of Thai artists _ emerging and established, it is hoped that this exhibition will also serve as a platform on which to explore the metaphysical concept of "documentation through conversation".
The works on show are either literally based on the documentation of certain events by using a colloquial narrative as a research method and an actual shooting format or are videos that document the idiosyncrasies of Thai society by critically addressing its cultural and historical background.
It is hoped that the exhibits will entice viewers into new and unfamiliar territory while engaging them, and the artists, in a colloquial and informative narrative.
