BANGKOK, 23 February 2013 – Operator of the Airport Rail Link, the State Railway of Thailand Electrified Train Company (SRTET), has revealed that the company is ready to begin the construction of a light rail line from Bang Yai to Bang Kapi if approved by the Ministry of Transport.

According to SRTET Chairman Chamroon Tangpaisarnkit, the company is fully prepared for the construction of the light rail system between Bang Yai and Bang Kapi as it is already equipped with personnel and experience from running the Airport Link. He pointed out that the light rail construction project will cost the company 30-40% less than that of a heavy rail line. However, he said it will have the capacity to transport only 20,000 passengers, which is half of what the larger train can accommodate.

The Chairman added that the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning is now conducting a feasibility study on the plan and deciding which agency will be responsible for the construction.

Furthermore, Mr Chamroon revealed that two more rail projects, namely the Airport Rail Link from Phaya Thai to Don Mueang Airport and the high speed train from Rayong to Suvarnabhumi Airport, will also be proposed to the government for consideration soon.
