Former senator Ruangkrai Likitwatana yesterday filed an election complaint against Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and a Democrat MP in connection with the Bangkok governor race.
In his letter to Apichart Sukhagganond, chairman of the Election Commission (EC), and Thaweesak Tuchinda, chairman of the Bangkok Election Committee, Ruangkrai charged Abhisit and MP Sirichok Sopha with violating Article 57 of the Local Council and Administration Act.
Ruangkrai said Sirichok framed Pheu Thai candidate Pongsapat Pongcharoen by linking him to the political violence of red-shirt protesters. He said Abhisit deceived Bangkok voters by announcing that he was running on No 16, which is actually the candidacy number of Democrat candidate Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the incumbent governor.
Ruangkrai also called on the EC to investigate an incident in which Seri Wongmontha, an academic, had tacitly urged voters to re-elect the Democrat candidate to block Pheu Thai from "seizing control of Bangkok".
Thaweesak said Ruangkrai had no right to file the complaint because only Pongsapat or other candidates had that prerogative.
He also said Sanhapong Suksrimuang, an independent candidate, had submitted more evidence to back up his claim that Suan Dusit Poll, Abac Poll and Bangkok University Poll had conducted unfair opinion surveys.
