DMP Chalerm to propose Internal Security Act enforcement in Deep South

BANGKOK, 17 February 2013 (NNT) Ć¢€" As insurgent violence in the countryĆ¢€™s restive South continues unabated, the government looks set to step up the enforcement of laws in this region.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Ubumrung, the director of the Committee to Mobilize Policy and Strategy to Solve Problems in the Southern Border Provinces, said he will propose to the committee meeting the imposition of Article 21 of the Internal Security Act in the troubled southern provinces.


He said the Region-4 Army Commander will be in charge of the implementation while the secretary-general of Office of the Council of State will be asked to help look over all legal aspects of the law enforcement.


Meanwhile, more than 300 members of the public, who have been affected by years of insurgent violence in the southern border region, attended a meeting to discuss the state remedies and healing process.


The discussion was chaired by Senator Anusart Suwanmongkol, in his capacity as chairman of the Upper House sub-committee overseeing the compensation issue.


Mr. Anusart said the meeting was organized to collect related to delayed compensation and unfair treatment experienced by Deep South residents.


He stated that all data gathered will be forwarded to the Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre (SBPAC) in order to help accelerate the compensation process.
