BANGKOK, 19 February 2013 – The Ministry of Commerce will allocate a special budget to the Public Warehouse Organization in an effort to prevent corruption in the state-initiated rice pledging scheme.

Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade Wiboonlasana Ruamraksa said the Commerce Ministry has been urgently issuing electronic verification document for farmers, needed for pledging their 2013 off-season paddies.

Ms. Wiboonlasana stated the computer system will make it more convenient for farmers while helping the government curb corruption in the rice-pledging scheme, by keeping all data from across the country rice pledging in one system.

The Department of Internal Trade chief said that the government has allocated 90 million baht in special budget to enable the Public Warehouse Organization to install computer systems at all pledging points and participating warehouses.

With regard to the preparation for the 2013 off-season rice pledging program, Ms. Wiboonlasana said directives to govern all stages of the pledging process are being prepared and will be submitted to the National Rice Policy Committee in March.

While stating that the price the government will pay for each ton of paddies pledged will remain at 15,000 baht, the Department of Internal Trade Director-General expects this year̢۪s off-season rice supply will stand at around 11 million tons.
