BANGKOK, 22 February 2013 (NNT) â" Thailand and Hong Kong are set to enhance trade and economic ties during Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatraâs upcoming official overseas trip.
Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom revealed on Thursday that PM Yingluck is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Hong Kong Governor Leung Chun-ying on February 26 before witnessing the signing of an agreement on closer trade and economic relations between Hong Kong Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Gregory So and himself.
Mr. Boonsong stated that the agreement will enhance cooperation in product, service and investment promotion, SMEs, logistics and transport, tourism, information technology as well as RD.
Director-General of the Department of Trade Negotiations Piramol Charoenpao added that Hong Kong is currently recognized as a gateway to the Chinese market and also Asiaâs financial and logistics hub.
Mrs. Piramol said Hong Kong was Thailandâs 9th-largest trading partner in 2012, when the country enjoyed trade surplus of 11.36 billion dollars with China's Special Administrative Region.
According to the Department of Trade Negotiations chief, major Thai exports to Hong Kong include computers and parts, jewelry and accessories, steel, plastic pellets, electrical appliances and parts, as well as rice, while its imports involve similar merchandises.
PM Yingluck is set to go on an official visit to South Korea and Hong Kong during February 24 and 26, during which she will take part in the swearing-in ceremony of South Korean President Park Guen Ye before joining trade representatives from the Commerce Ministry, the Foreign Ministry and the Finance Ministry in a road show in Hong Kong.
