BANGKOK, 9 February 2013 – The two main contenders competing for the Bangkok governor seat have unveiled flood prevention policies as part of their campaigns.
Pheu Thai candidate Police General Pongsapat Pongcharoen, who has been holding a lead in opinion polls, said that many low-lying areas in the capital experience brief flooding due to piping issues. He proposed linking old piping systems to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration̢۪s sewerage system as well as carrying out sewer dredging work and increasing the size of existing pipes.
Meanwhile, Democrat contender MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra told voters in Bang Plat district, one of the worst-hit areas during the 2011 flood crisis, that once re-elected, he plans to build additional mega tunnels and water retention areas in the capital. In addition, MR Sukhumbhand is set to increase the capacity of weather radar in a bid to predict rain patterns in Bangkok more accurately.
Flooding has been one of the most persistent problems in the kingdom, particularly during monsoon seasons. Severe flooding in 2011 resulted in a total of 815 deaths and 13.6 million people affected.
