NARATHIWAT, 22 February 2013 (NNT) â" 3 suspected members of the southern insurgency have turned themselves in to authorities and 27 more may follow suit, after living in hiding in Malaysia for years.
Tak Bai district chief Somsak Sitthiworakan and security officials accepted the suspectsâ surrender at Ban Puyu in Ko Sathon sub-district, Tak Bai district, Narathiwat province. The three, consisting of Rosali Masa, Mahadi Dure and Awae Liladae are suspects wanted for internal security offenses.
The men had the village headmen in each of their localities arrange the surrender, after becoming tired of living in hiding in Malaysia for 5 years. They decided to turn themselves in because of the current opportunity offered by authorities.
Mr. Rosali, one of the three suspects, said he was happy to be back home and that he preferred to live in Thailand. He said he would tell his friends in Malaysia, a group of 27 persons wanted for internal security offenses, to also surrender. Mr. Rosali believes the group would follow suit once he contacts them.
District Chief Somsak said he will do all he can to guarantee fair proceeding for those misled into the insurgency, because all sides needed to work together to bring lasting peace to the southern border provinces.
