BANGKOK, 9 January 2013 – The Transport Ministry has assured that the implementation of the 300-baht daily minimum wage is posing no serious effect on the government’s electric rail construction project.

Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt said on Monday that the nationwide implementation of the new daily minimum wage is expected to push the cost of all electric rail constructions up by a mere 1.6%, as workers hired to work in the projects have already been earning more than 300 baht per day.

Instead, Mr. Chadchart said that these much-anticipated projects are actually suffering the shortage of skilled workers while many stated-initiated railway and land transport construction plans are experiencing delay due to several setbacks.

The Transport Minister also conceded that the government’s “First Car” policy is partly to be blamed for more congestion on the streets of Thailand.

He stated that official data shows around 50% of newly-registered vehicles from across the country during 2011 and 2012 were those purchased under the “First Car” policy.

Mr. Chadchart went on to say that other causes of heavier traffic congestion are the ongoing construction of several electric rail routes and the continued growth of Thai economy.
