BANGKOK, 9 January 2013 – Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra is set to quit Bangkok governorship in order to ensure fair competition in the new gubernatorial election.
According to Opposition Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Bangkok Governor will today submit his resignation, which will be in effect on January 9th, 1 day before his term comes to an end. Then he will report to the Department of Special Investigation or DSI to acknowledge his charges over the 30-year extension of a skytrain contract.
The Opposition leader said he wanted the gubernatorial election race to be fair without Mr. Sukhumbhand still in office. However, he said he would not take Pol. Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen, the candidate likely to run under the Pheu Thai's banner, lightly as the new gubernatorial election is expected to be a toe-to-toe fight between the 2 sides.
Mr. Abhisit said he was confident in the Bangkok governorâs performance and achievement over the past four years, and asked the people to give Mr. Sukhumbhand another chance to carry on with his good work.
