A phone jammer meant to block signals to illegal mobile phones in prison cells accidentally blacked out all AIS phones in the Chatuchak area for a day last week.
A report by Telecomasia said the high-tech goof occurred on Jan 24 around Klong Prem prison.
Prison authorities routinely use jammers to try to deal with the many illegal mobile phones smuggled to prisoners.
Many of the illegal phones supposedly are used to allow convicted criminals to continue their contacts with gangs outside the prison walls.
Last week, however, use of the phone jammer interfered with calls on the AIS 900 MHz GSM band.
"This apparently caused many dropped calls in the area," the report said. It did not say whether prison authorities knew about the problem outside their walls.
Smuggled phones are a major problem inside many prisons, including high-security institutions like Klong Prem.
In addition to normal smuggling and corruption by guards, phones and other illicit items are often thrown into the prisons from outside at pre-arranged times and places. Last year, guards intercepted one smuggling attempt that used a remote-controlled helicopter to carry contraband over the prison walls.
