BANGKOK, 5 January 2013 – Five provinces in the North and Northeast of Thailand reportedly remain under harsh cold spells while many other areas are concurrently suffering from drought and flood problems.
According to the report by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), Chiang Mai, Uttaradit, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai and Loei provinces are the five provinces which have been declared cold spell disaster zones since the start of winter in October 2012. The cold weather conditions continue to affect the livelihood of more than 1.6 million residents living in the areas.
Apart from the freezing temperatures, 24 other provinces in the North and Northeast are also experiencing drought and have already been declared disaster zones. These provinces include Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Chaiyaphum, Si Sa Ket, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Sukhothai, Nakhon Sawan, Chiang Mai and Phrae.
As for the South of Thailand, nearly 15,000 homes in Trang, Phatthalung and Narathiwat have been flooded. The report claimed the flooding is a result of continuous heavy rains since the end of 2012. A number of roads and bridges in the flood path have been damaged. However, the DDPM said the situation will return to normal in a week if the rain stops.
