BANGKOK, 9 January 2013 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has sworn to the Islamic group from the South that the government gives priority to the solving of the southern unrest problem and has urged for coordination among relevant officials.
The Islamic committee of 15 southern provinces, led by President of the Federation of Islamic Commissions Kariya Kitcharak, paid a visit and extended their New Year greetings to Prime Minister Yingluck on Monday. The group also called on the premier to help tackle the southern conflict.
PM Yingluck accepted their request and said she would call a meeting on the issue again with them. She confirmed her support for solutions to the problem and expressed the governmentâs readiness to set it as national agenda. Ms Yingluck said she would instruct local officials to urgently cooperate with central units so that their work on the southern problem would move in the same direction as much as possible.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung met with Chularatchamontri Aziz Pitakkhumpol, the spiritual leader of Thai Muslims, on the southern violence. He is also scheduled to meet with the Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand before visiting Malaysia, which is located just across the border from the conflict-torn region, from 8-10 January 2013.
