BANGKOK, 14 January 2013 (NNT)-The Department of Employment (DoE) has vowed to take action on 3 major issues this year to raise the standards of Thai and alien workers.
DOE Deputy Director-General Prawit Kiangpol said the 3 major issues his department will address this year include the legalization of alien workers, the welfare of Thai labor working overseas and shortages of labor in the domestic market.
According to him, migrant workers will be allowed to enter Thailand only through a quota system set in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) made between Thailand and the countries involved.
Alien workers, who have been hired through the MOU, will be informed of their contract terms and how to adapt to their host country as well as how to work with their Thai employers.
Migrant workers will be paid the minimum wage at minimum and will be entitled to social welfare benefits. As for Thai workers seeking jobs abroad, the law governing the service fee for job agencies will be amended to assure they cannot take advantage of Thai labor. The new law is expected to be enforced no later than March.
Meanwhile, the DoE is planning to solve the labor shortage problem by conducting a survey on labor demands in all industries before submitting the findings to the Ministry of Education. The Ministry is expected to promote the improvement of skills that are inadequate in Thailand through the development of education.
