BANGKOK, 9 January 2013 – Army Chief of Staff Gen. Udomdej Sitabutr has expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation between the military, police and civilians in tackling the southern unrest but admitted that there are still elements of insurgency mingling with the local people.
The army chief of staff on Monday praised the confiscation of a number of guns and explosive materials on the night of 28 December 2012 at Cho-airong district in Narathiwat. He said the gun seizure showed that the police, military and civilians had worked together well, with great cooperation from the local people.
However, Gen. Udomdej admitted that insurgents were still hiding among the locals; he thus instructed army officers to protect all groups of innocent people. Prior to a visit to Malaysia of Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, the army official said the relations between Thailand and Malaysia were on good terms and he believed the trip would greatly benefit solutions to the southern conflict.
