Written By Unknown on Sunday, 13 January 2013 | 07:28

With over 2 billion app downloads in December, Apple passed another milestone. Since the App Store opened in summer 2008 more than 40 billion apps have been downloaded, almost half of them in the past year, the company announced.

The developers of the apps have been paid a total of 7 billion dollars and the store has more than 500 million active users. The main competitor to Apple's App Store is Google's application store for Android devices, Google Play.

Android is now dominating the smartphone market with a share of more than 50 per cent but Apple is still on top in the tablet market.//DPA
