The local residents, who lived alongside the Zawtika gas pipeline project, were compensated US$6.8 million for the devastation of their houses and farming areas.

The compensation amount was more than that for the Yadana project and Yetagun project, said Khun Naw Khan, project engineer of the Zawtika project. Besides, this amount was calculated in detail to make up for their losses.

He added that gas discovered in the Mottama Gulf is expected to come on stream by the end of 2013. Ongoing drilling from Myanmar to Thailand is about 50 per cent complete.

In this project, Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) holds 20 per cent stake while Thailand's PTT Exploration and Production International owns 80 per cent.

The pipeline from Yayphyu township in lower Myanmar will connect to the Kanchanaburi pipeline in Thailand in 2013.

The project is estimated to produce 240 cubic feet of gas per day to be dispatched to Thailand while 60 cubic feet of gas will be produced for Myanmar.
