US military: North Korean rocket placed "object" in orbit

Washington - The North Korean rocket launched early Wednesday appeared to have put something in orbit, the US military said.

"Initial indications are that the missile deployed an object that appeared to achieve orbit," the North American Aerospace Defense Command said on its website, NORAD.mil.

Pyongyang said its rocket was successful in putting a satellite into orbit, the official Korean Central News Agency reported earlier Wednesday.

An earlier launch in April failed when the rocket blew up shortly after blastoff.

Western observers have condemned the launches as tests for ballistic technology, but Pyongyang says they are peaceful and only aim to put up telecommunications satellites.//DPA
